Synopsis

'Offbeat' is the first Marathi play that talks directly about issues faced by the LGBT community in India, voicing protest against the now repealed law, Section 377, which had considered homosexuals as criminals. The play is written in a musical comedy form telling the story of a young boy Mahesh who comes out to his cool granny, who is initially shocked and reluctant to accept such queer identity. He convinces her to give him a chance to show her different queer lives. He introduces to her his lesbian, gay and transgender friends, they show granny their problems and fate in Indian society. Granny helps them find their political voice and together they go on to create a LGBT street play and perform it on the streets of Pune.
