Synopsis
Second Shift Muster was written in the mid ‘nineties. It was the time when the first effects of the liberalization of the Indian economy were beginning to show. There were the obvious beneficial effects. There were also some unforeseen effects. There were scores of people like Sardar who worked with their hands all their lives, were proud of their skills, but were finding themselves out of place in the changing economic context. It was also the time when we saw the growth of the builder-developer business in urban locations, with old buildings being knocked down to create high rise apartment and commercial complexes. 1997 was the year of the Golden Anniversary of Indian independence. The Royal National Theatre in London had decided to celebrate the milestone event suitably. An exchange project was taken up with Bangalore Little Theatre called Project Nadya. A group of young women from England would work with a group of young women from Bangalore and nearby places. In the second phase of the project the team from Bangalore went to London and was placed in a select number of theatre companies as interns to ongoing theatre productions. The play Second Shift Muster was performed by the National in London as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
