Synopsis
Bengal, August 1943. A famine has been ravaging the countryside for months, while supplies from the once-prosperous land are sent abroad to feed hungry troops fighting a war that no one understands. The freedom fighters and the Communists fight among themselves for the popular voice, while the ordinary villager, with no one to speak for her, simply dies. Then comes a great flood. Two hungry men find shelter on a tree. Two men from different social strata fight for survival and try to understand their position in the great karmic cycle of life. Two men who have seen life in a form no one should have to see try to understand what they did see. Through their conversations about philosophy, love, and war, they try to rationalise their existence, to understand and appreciate what it means to be alive. The play is inspired by real events. The play has been published by Dhauli Books as part of an anthology titled 'Two Plays on Hunger', currently unavailable for purchase.
